Fat transfer is a surgical technique used to improve body shape and facial contour. It consists of extracting fat from one part of the body, where there is excess, and transferring it to another. Fat lipotransfer is performed through a very small incision, the fat is extracted through a cannula and injected into the desired area, this fat is injected with a specially designed syringe, so that it is evenly distributed. The injected fat is gradually integrated and converted into local fatty tissue.
Various parts of the body can be enhanced with fat transfer, including facial contours, the neck area, cheekbones, cheeks, shoulders, buttocks, thighs, arms, and hips. This technique is also used to improve the appearance of breasts and to reduce fat in the abdominal area.
Fat transfer is a safe technique when performed by a qualified plastic surgeon, however, as with any surgical procedure, there are some risks like infection, pain, bruising, scarring, allergies to anesthesia, and the possibility that the injected fat is absorbed instead of staying in the desired area. More serious complications as embolism, thromboembolism, and other, may rarely be seen.
The injected fat is gradually absorbed and integrated. Therefore, the final result will not be seen immediately. Most patients can expect to see optimal results six to twelve months after the procedure.
Transferred fat from the mid-back, abdomen, and thighs is the most durable. This fat has a higher density and a greater resistance to absorption, this fat is known as “white” fat, which distributes evenly in the area to be treated.
In most cases there is no rejection of the transferred fat, as it is extracted from the same patient, however in some rare cases, the transferred fat may be rejected by the body because it recognizes the fat as foreign tissue. This can occur with an inexperienced surgeon or if the patient has an underlying medical condition.
