LIPOSCULPTURE or liposuction

Liposculpture is a procedure that is carried out to remove excess fat that tends to accumulate in certain specific areas of the body, such as the abdomen, flanks, hips, back, thighs and arms, in order to achieve a slim body figure.

The removal of fat is not a procedure to lose weight, but rather that aims to shape the body in those areas with excess fat, for this reason liposculpture is performed on people who are slightly overweight or normal weight who feel dissatisfied with some extra rolls, these patients must be in optimal health conditions to be subjected to this.

The main objective of the liposuction procedure is to remove the fat excess that tends to accumulate in certain specific areas of the body such as the abdomen, sides, hips, back, thighs and arms, as a means of contouring the body.  This procedure is normally called liposculpture when part of the removed fat is applied in deficient areas.

This procedure is performed with a liposuction equipment that extracts the fat of the previous mentioned areas through small incisions. Sometimes it is required to use the VASER equipment when the patient has too much accumulated fat in certain zones without excessive flaccidity, or sequels from previous liposuctions. The VASER vaporizes the fat, making it detach and allowing its removal with no complications to get better outcomes and an easier recovery.

This surgical procedure is done under general anesthesia and it is outpatient. Frequently the extracted fat is used to inject it in the buttocks to increase their volume.

Some basic guidelines, provided by the plastic surgeon, are important to be followed:

  • Have a thoroughly shower with iodine the night before and the day of the surgery to decrease the bacterial content and the possibility of infection.

  • Do not take aspirin or anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen, diclofenac among others, to reduce the possibility of bleeding.

  • Have all the laboratory exams ready.

  • Attend the indicated pre-op assessments.

The estimated sick leave days in liposculpture or liposuction procedure are relatively few.   Most people are back to work within five to seven days.  It is also rather important to take medications as prescribed by the doctor, to walk frequently in the postoperative and to wear the body-compression garment most of the time.  The patients are encouraged to attend ultrasound therapies and body massages. In case of significant changes, consult the doctor immediately.

Liposuction has suffered some degree of adverse publicity, with a great covering of severe or even fatal complications done by the media. However, it is the most commonly performed procedure worldwide with low-risk rate as long as it is done with the correct conditions.

It only must be done by certified plastic surgeons, with greater expertise in the field, in adequate certified clinics under the continuous observation of anesthetists.  I can assure you that we have not had these kinds of complications in many years.

Less frequently, other types of risks can be present as hematomas or infections.

People who are considering the idea to undergo this procedure must be absolutely sure that they have certified, experienced plastic surgeons and anesthetists, and of course, to attend prestigious institutions.  People need to follow all the pre-op and post-op directions adequately.
