MASTOPEXY OR Breast Lift

Mastopexy or mammary Pexia (lift) is a frequently performed procedure that seeks to recover the youthful position of breasts. The purpose of this surgery is to raise the nipple-areola to an aesthetically appropriate position, rearranging the mammary gland to give more volume and removing excess skin to give the breast an even tone.

In the breast lift, mammary tissue is not removed in most cases, in this procedure the tissue is accommodated in a harmonious and aesthetic position depending on the body of each patient.

Mastopexy or breast lift seeks to reposition the breast tissue that has descended due to time or after pregnancy and lactation. The procedure uses the woman’s tissue to fix everything and place it in a higher position. In some cases, it may be necessary to implant breast prostheses that could vary in size, which help not only to improve volume, but also to give the breasts a more rounded and firm appearance. This surgery has become more and more frequent, and it leaves either periareolar scars or scars in the lower part of the breasts.

This procedure is performed under general anesthesia and is usually done as an outpatient procedure. After a pregnancy, it is necessary that the woman is no longer lactating and that the breasts have recovered and achieved a stable situation.

There are certain instructions a patient needs to follow, most of them will be discussed prior to the surgery with the surgeon and his team, some examples are:

  • Bathe with iodine or chlorexidine foam all over the body the night before and the day of the procedure to reduce the bacterial content and the possibility of infections (if you do not have allergies).

  • Anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, diclofenac, among others, should not be taken, to reduce the chances of bleeding.

  • Take the laboratory tests indicated by the doctors.

  • Attend the previous assessments indicated

Despite mastopexy being a major breast surgery, it is minimally painful. Patients may generally require between 5 and 10 rest days post-surgery. It is necessary to take some medications formulated as antibiotics and analgesics. Within the care, it is also required to use a support bra, avoid sudden movements and arm overexertion and take care of the wounds.

Subsequently, scar care will be needed, applying sunscreen, silicone gel, digital massages, and other medications that can improve the final appearance of the scars. It is important to note that the final quality of the scars from a mastopexy and other surgeries depends on each patient and their type of scarring, although the measures described above may help.

Mastopexies are common surgeries that, carried out by expert professionals and in appropriate clinics, have very low risks. Eventually there could be bruising, problems with wounds, infections, healing disorders, asymmetries, and others. This kind of procedure should only be done by certified plastic surgeons, with experience and in reputable and authorized clinics, with the accompaniment of anesthesiologists.

Whoever thinks about having this procedure done, should make sure that they are in expert hands with certified plastic surgeons, qualified anesthesiologists, and serious institutions. Always following the instructions for post and pre-care for the surgery.
